Does Drinking Water Help You Lose Weight?

Men and women from all over the world spend millions of dollars a year on useless diet products; even though, the cheapest weight loss tool is free, and can be found almost anywhere.

The health benefits of water are endless: it helps your body remove waste, it aids in digestion, protects your joints, etc.

However, today I just want to focus on how water can assist you in your quest for a perfect body.

Drinking the correct amount of water at the correct time can help you shed some serious weight. There’s a reason “does drinking water help you lose weight?” is such a common nutrition question.

More and more recent studies are showing that increased water consumption can raise your metabolism and lower your daily calorie intake.

The human body isn’t as smart as you think

Humans have used their bodies to accomplish many amazing feats. (Have you ever seen that Discovery Channel documentary about the human body?)

Yet, our bodies have a lot of trouble distinguishing between our two most basic needs: hunger and thirst.

A health article originally featured on CNN explains it best: 

“If you don’t drink enough water throughout the day, you may mistake thirst for hunger and eat more than you really need, which can also impair weight loss. So staying well hydrated is important, particularly if you are trying to lose weight”

Many times, what you perceive as a hunger signal is actually your body asking for water. I want you to try something. Next time you feel a little hungry, drink an 8 ounce glass of water and wait about 10-15 minutes.

If the feeling of hunger goes away, congrats! You just avoided shoving unneeded calories down your throat.

Drinking water before meals

According to a recent study, drinking two cups of water before a meal causes a slight decrease in calorie consumption for that meal.

Here’s an overview of the study (it was featured in a health article on BusinessWeek):

Researchers divided two groups of overweight and obese men and women aged 55 to 75 into two groups: one group was told to follow a low-fat, low-calorie diet; the other group was told to follow the same diet and to drink two cups of water before breakfast, lunch and dinner.

After 12 weeks, those who drank water before meals had lost 15.5 pounds, compared to 11 pounds for the non-water drinkers, a nearly 30 percent difference.

As you can see, this is a great strategy to minimize daily calorie intake. If you fill you’re stomach with water, it’ll have less room for food.

Say goodbye and good riddance to empty calories

I am a strong believer in choosing to drink water over any other liquid. Consuming 300+ calories a day in soda, punch, and fruit juice is completely unacceptable if you’re trying to lose weight. Coffee, tea, and water are all 0 calorie alternatives that will supply you with more energy in the long-run than any sugary beverage.

Changing any habit requires time and energy, so I’m not saying it’ll be a walk in the park. But the sooner you can cut out empty calories, the better.

Drinking water to speed up your metabolism

It has also been proven that drinking cold water can speed up your metabolic rate. Your metabolism is pretty much the motor running your body and it runs on the calories you get from food.

Drinking ice water has shown to increase metabolic rate because energy is needed to convert the cold water into warmer water (that’s why whenever water leaves your body it’s never the a cold temperature). This essentially gives your body a nice workout!

Warning: Too much water is NOT a good thing

Drinking an insane amount of water can result in a condition called hyponatremia. This occurs when you consume so much water that the sodium in your blood and tissues is diluted.

This is a very rare condition that only happens when someone drinks gallons of water in a short time period, so you should worry more about under drinking than over drinking.

Too much of something is never a good thing, do everything in moderation and you’ll be fine!

Long story short, the answer to the question “Does drinking water help you lose weight?” is a definite YES.

Consuming H2O before meals and when you feel hungry are just a couple tactics to help you keep off the lbs and kg’s.

Drinking water may not be some revolutionary idea that eliminates the need for good exercise and a healthy diet, but over time following the simple tips above will help you reach your weight loss goals.
